During the reign of Elizabeth I (1558-1603) small sycamore roundels were used to serve sticky desserts such as cheeses, marchpane and sugarplums.
They were richly decorated on the reverse side with design of flowers, fruit and insects and the verses were recited or sung as after-dinner entertainment. It is believed that Queen Elizabeth gave sets of roundels as presents to her courtiers.
A set of Elizabethan Roundels has been sympathetically reproduced, carefully crafted and hand finished to be as authentic to the originals as possible. They give an insight into the skills of the Tudor craftsment who produced them in the 16th century. Originally drawn and painted as a manuscript book by Ann Frances Hall.
The Roundel Box is based on an original Elizabethan Roundel Box c.1590. Made of European Oak. Each one individually turned.
An accompaniment to the roundels is a book Elizabethan Roundels by Ann Frances Hall. It describes the process of producing the calligraphy manuscript book and tries to solve some of the mysteries of the Elizabethan Age.
